About
I'm a software engineer based in Karachi. I spend most of my time building products end to end — the part people click, the part that keeps it standing up, and the unglamorous middle where those two have to agree with each other.
I got here the long way round. I started because I wanted something to look right on a screen, and stayed because it turned out the interesting problems were underneath. That's still roughly the split: craft at the surface, correctness below it, and not much patience for faking either one.
I care about work that holds up when you look closely — the second click, the empty state, the thing that happens when the network drops. Most of what I find satisfying is in that layer.
What I Do
Less a list of tools, more the shape of the work I keep coming back to.
Building products end to end
Taking something from a vague sentence to a thing people can actually open. I'm most useful early, when the problem is still soft and the decisions are cheap to change.
Interfaces that behave
Interfaces are mostly a series of small promises. I like getting the unglamorous ones right — loading, failure, focus, the back button — because that's what separates a demo from something usable.
The systems underneath
Data models, boundaries, the shape of an API. Work that nobody praises when it's right and everybody feels when it's wrong.
Working with people
Writing things down, cutting scope out loud, disagreeing early rather than politely. Most engineering problems I've seen up close were communication problems wearing a costume.
Now
A snapshot, kept honest and current rather than impressive.
Building
This site, and a side project I keep rewriting instead of finishing.
Reading
Something I'm slightly underqualified for, which is the usual state of affairs.
Learning
Going deeper on systems design — the parts I've been getting away with intuition on.
Listening to
Too much of one album, as always.
Based in
Karachi, Pakistan. Available in most timezones with enough notice.
Off the clock
What I do when nobody's paying for it. It explains more than the CV does.
Building websites
The same craft as the day job with none of the constraints — design-led sites, built end to end because I wanted to rather than because anyone asked. It's where I try things I'd never risk on someone else's deadline, and the good ones end up in a gallery.
sites.abdlx.comFilm photography
Shooting 35mm around the city on weekends. Half the roll is always wasted and that's most of the appeal.
Football
Watching more than playing, and far too invested in results that have nothing to do with me.
Reading
Non-fiction mostly, three books at once, none of them finished in the order I started them.
Walking the city
Long, aimless routes through Karachi. It's where most of my thinking actually gets done.
Chai, seriously
Strong, on the stove, no shortcuts. I have opinions and I will share them unprompted.
Let's talk.
Open to conversations about building things, interesting problems, and work worth doing. Slow to reply on weekends — not ignoring you, just outside.
